Jessica is the daughter of one of the women we met on Tuesday in Parramos. She came to us asking for prayer. Jessica attends a public school in Guatemala where she is being bullied by some boys in her school. She is sent threatening messages saying that if she does not pay up that they will rape her. Her mother is afraid for her life. Sadly, this is not uncommon here in Guatemala. Jessica is only 15 years old.
Yesterday while doing some home visits, nurse Vicky shared one of her recent experiences with us. It is not uncommon for people to bring their sick children to her house. A few weeks ago, she was home sick. A knock came to her door. A three year old was brought to her who had been abused...beaten. There was nothing Vicky could do. The wee girl died in her arms.
My heart broke for Vicky. I can understand how she felt in many ways. Horrific abuse of a child is not something we are immune to in Canada. The difference is that when I have been faced with the same situation, I am surrounded by a team of people. Here in Guatemala, Vicky is alone.
I was reminded that even though sometimes our efforts here in Guatemala seem small, that we bring such encouragement to the AOJ team. What a privilege to be used by God here.

"Not called!'" did you say? "Not heard the call," I think you should say. Put your ear down to the Bible, and hear Him bid you go and pull sinners out of the fire of sin. Put your ear down to the burdened, agonized heart of humanity, and listen to its pitiful wail for help.
Go stand by the gates of hell, and hear the damned entreat you to go to their father's house and bid their brothers and sisters and servants and masters not to come there.
Then look Christ in the face ~whose mercy you have professed to obey ~ and tell Him whether you will join heart and soul and body and circumstances in the march to publish His mercy to the world.
